Frequently Asked Questions

Download the BikeLink app, available for iOS and Android. Sign in or sign up for an account. This requires an email address and phone number. A credit or debit card number is needed to start a rental. Before renting, add stored value to the account using the “Account Balance” button. In the future, adding value to a PayPal account will be an option. Select a locker in the app, choose the length of rental, and tap “Start Rental & Open Door.” The selected locker’s door will automatically open. Park the rear wheel of the bicycle first.

The BikeLink smartphone app is the recommended way to sign up for a bike locker. Please reach out to BikeLink.org, support@bikelink.org or (888) 540-0546 for alternative registration options if the mobile app is not an option or photo ID verification cannot be obtained. TAP card access is available when you register your card at BikeLink.org

Bicycles can be parked for up to 72 consecutive hours. If renters exceed this limit, an additional 72 hour penalty period will begin, during which customers are charged the maximum hourly rate of $0.25 / hour. See #10 for rentals exceeding the maximum limit.

Lockers come in three different sizes- Standard, Large, and Extra Large (see diagrams and measurements below). Standard lockers can fit most adult-sized bikes, while Large and Extra Large lockers offer more space for cargo bikes.

If using the mobile app:
· Open the BikeLink app and tap “End Rental & Open Door” before the rental expires to avoid late fees. Be sure to close the door after the bicycle is removed from the locker.

If using TAP card or customer service access:
· Go to the access hub, tap your TAP card, and head to the locker to end the rental.

Bike parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis. Use the BikeLink app or website to see which lockers are currently occupied before arrival at your destination. The locker will only be made available for rental once the app is in range of the lockers so be sure to be in front of the desired locker before initiating a rental.

The keypad is used to provide alternative access to the locker in the case that a customer loses access to their mobile device and cannot use the BikeLink app. BikeLink support can provide a temporary access code via the keypad.

$0.75 flat rate for the first 12 hours; $0.10 per hour for hours 13-24 and $0.25 per hour for hours 25+, with a maximum rental period of 72 hours. The app will present a full receipt, or you can view your transaction history at BikeLink.org

While you can use your TAP card as an access device, it does not use TAP funds. You must sign up at BikeLink.org and register your TAP card, then load funds (that can also be used in the app)
The bicycle lockers will initially be available to rent through the BikeLink mobile app. Metro is exploring solutions that allow the TAP card to be used for access payment.

Cash payments will be available via PayPal to BikeLink or by purchasing a prepaid debit card with cash at a local shop. PayPal customers can currently digitize cash at over 90,000 retail locations nationwide. Once PayPal is added as a payment method for BikeLink users, customers will be able to transfer funds from a PayPal account to a BikeLink account. More information is available at https://www.paypal.com/us/digital-wallet/manage-money/add-cash.

If the rental expires before the bike is retrieved, the payment method for the rental will continue to be charged according to the Metro fee schedule. Customers may not extend their rental. After 72 hours of renting the locker, Metro will flag the locker as potentially abandoned and will start an additional 72-hour clock during which customers will continue to be charged the full maximum hourly rate ($0.25 per hour). After that second 72-hour period expires, Metro will consider the bike abandoned and can take steps to remove it to make the locker available for additional customers. After an abandoned bike is removed, Metro Lost & Found will store it for 90 days before determining the next steps for its disposition. The old bike lockers use physical keys that must be mailed out to the renter before a locker rental can be initiated. This program only allowed a little over 800 renters to utilize the lockers. The current rental period is renewed every six months, resulting in many locations having long waitlists for those who wish to rent a locker.

The new locker program offers electronic lockers which can be rented on a daily basis, eliminating the need for a physical key. More patrons will have access to bicycle lockers. Additionally, the new lockers will be installed at stations that previously did not have secure bicycle parking. The lockers were redesigned with a number of security features based on research and feedback from the previous versions.

Replacing all the bike lockers in the system is a large project. We anticipate that all stations will be completed by 2027. In the meantime, keep an eye on The Source and Metro’s social media to find out which stations will soon have the new bike lockers.
